Long ago, there was a poor young man named Ly Van who went to apply for a job at a wealthy merchant’s house. The merchant was known for being fastidious and hard to please. Ly Van didn’t know what to say, only bowed his head in silence. The merchant asked, “Why don’t you say anything?” Ly Van replied, “I ask permission to listen first before speaking.”
The merchant then gave Ly Van a task: “Go to the market and buy a rooster, but remember to buy a rooster that doesn’t crow.”
Ly Van happily agreed. At the market, Ly Van walked around, asking everyone, but no one sold a rooster that didn’t crow. Finally, Ly Van approached an old vegetable seller and asked, “Grandpa, do you know anyone who sells a rooster that doesn’t crow?”
The old man laughed and said, “A rooster that doesn’t crow is still called a rooster? Don’t joke with this old man!”
Ly Van thought for a moment, then smiled and said, “Grandpa is right, a rooster that doesn’t crow is still called a rooster? I apologize for asking such a silly question.”
Ly Van turned to leave when the old man called out, “Wait! Do you want to buy this rooster? It crows very loudly!”. Ly Van turned back and asked, “Really, Grandpa? Why did you say it doesn’t crow?”
The old man laughed, “Ah, this rooster crows very loudly, but it only crows every early morning, right now it’s sleeping soundly.”
Ly Van bought the rooster and delivered it to the merchant. The merchant was very surprised to hear Ly Van recount the story. He praised Ly Van for being skillful and intelligent.
