Teaching Leadership Skills: From Captain to Fire-Starter

“Leadership is not a position, it’s a responsibility.” This quote has resonated with me since day one of my journey in soft skills training, especially in teaching leadership skills. Ten years – a journey filled with countless challenges, and through it all, I’ve realized that a teacher is also a leader, guiding their students through “storms” to reach success.

From my very first class, I pondered: How can I convey dry knowledge about management and strategy in a way that’s easy to understand and apply? How can I ignite the “fire” of leadership potential within each student?

The answer came to me unexpectedly during a survival skills training course. Amidst the vast wilderness, facing the harsh challenges of nature, I suddenly realized that leadership skills are not something lofty or distant. They lie in the ability to adapt, respond flexibly, and above all, in the spirit of unity and overcoming difficulties together.

Improving Japanese listening skills is also one of the important factors to help you become a good leader in the era of integration.

From Autocratic “Captain”…

I once taught a group of young individuals, all ambitious “captains” in the business field. They came to the class wanting to be equipped with the secrets to becoming talented leaders, steering their business “ships” through any storm.

However, after the initial assessments, I noticed a common thread among them: authoritarianism, stubbornness, and a lack of listening and empathy. They were like “captains” who only knew how to give orders without caring about their “crew.”

…To Engaging “Fire-Starter”

Recognizing the issue, I decided to change my teaching methods. Instead of rigidly stuffing knowledge, I created simulation games and real-life scenarios for them to experience and learn from directly.

In a business crisis simulation exercise, I divided the class into small groups, each acting as a “leadership team.” The condition was that they had to work together to find the optimal solution within a limited time. Initially, they still held onto the habit of “ordering,” imposing their opinions on others.

However, when faced with time pressure and differing viewpoints, they were forced to learn how to listen, understand, and cooperate. From initially being autocratic “captains,” they gradually became “guides” who knew how to ignite the potential of their “crew” and steer the common “ship” towards the destination.

Teaching Leadership Skills: More Than Knowledge, It’s an Art

After many years of experience in this profession, I’ve come to realize one thing: teaching leadership skills is not just about imparting knowledge, but also an art.

It requires the teacher to have a pure heart, enthusiasm, and a deep understanding of human psychology. Because each student comes to the class with their own stories, concerns, and goals.

Many people wonder: “Is leadership skill an innate quality?” According to Professor Le Van Thanh, a leading expert in leadership psychology: “Anyone can become a leader, as long as they have enough aspiration and are equipped with the right methods.”

New Specified Skilled Worker visa is one of Japan’s policies to attract talent, allowing foreign workers to have the opportunity to work and develop leadership skills in the Land of the Rising Sun.

What Are the Secrets to Becoming a True “Leader”?

To become a talented leader, you need to constantly cultivate yourself in many aspects:

  • Enhance professional knowledge: Knowledge is the solid foundation for every decision and action of a leader.
  • Develop soft skills: Communication, presentation, negotiation, conflict resolution skills, etc., are powerful “weapons” to help you lead a team.
  • Develop strategic thinking: The ability to see far ahead, anticipate, and seize opportunities will help you make wise decisions.

Sales skills for businesses will help you become an excellent leader in the business field, leading your team to achieve outstanding success.

And most importantly, always keep a “warm heart” – a heart full of compassion, empathy, and a spirit of progress. Because only when you truly care about people, about the collective, can you become a “fire-starter,” igniting positive energy and leading them together to conquer new heights.
